Sam Heaton, Communications and Engagement Officer at Outlookers, shares her thoughts on Accessible Travel
Hello, I’m Sam Heaton, the Communications and Engagement Officer at Outlookers. Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on an essential aspect of accessible public transportation: live audio announcements on buses.
Riding the Wave of Change: Why Audio Announcements on Buses are a Game Changer
As a visually impaired individual, the challenges of navigating bus routes can be overwhelming. However, there’s a promising solution emerging – audio announcements.
Audio announcements provide invaluable assistance for those of us who struggle to identify stops as they pass by. Furthermore, they offer benefits for the general public, as they can help anyone feel more at ease while traveling through unfamiliar areas.
I was absolutely delighted when I recently experienced the live audio announcements on bus 203 from Huddersfield to Dewsbury. Although this feature is part of a national rollout, it’s not yet widespread, making my experience all the more remarkable.
As an Outlookers member, I eagerly anticipate the day when audio announcements become standard on every bus in West Yorkshire. After all, regions like Greater London have been successfully implementing this accessibility feature for years. It’s crucial that we prioritize these advancements in our region to foster greater confidence and independence for those who need it most.
By embracing live audio announcements on buses, we’re not just making a polite gesture – we’re advocating for a more inclusive public transportation system that empowers individuals with visual impairments and enhances the overall experience for all passengers. Let’s continue to celebrate progress and push for change!
